200 Main

Where ‘casual’ is defined as pretty darn great.

By Hope S. Philbrick

The newest place to stay in Highlands, North Carolina, is an old motel that’s been updated and upgraded by the folks who also run the town’s swankiest digs, Old Edwards Inn & Spa.

Whether you’ve always wanted to stay at Old Edwards Inn & Spa but can’t afford the splurge or are already an Old Edwards fan, the new 200 Main is worth checking into.

Described in marketing materials as “motel chic” and “casual,” 200 Main is compelling priced from $95 to $225 per night, depending on when you visit and which room you book. But don’t let the price fool you: 200 Main is far more elegant than national chain hotels of equivalent price.

Step into any of the rustic-stylish rooms and you’ll crave the name of the decorator; the décor is mountain-modern with wood floors, vessel sinks, plantation shutters, luxury linens and an earthy color palate. Stay to appreciate some divine upscale treats, like the heated marble floors in the bathrooms! Some guestrooms have a large stone fireplace, a balcony, or both!

Sure, compared to Old Edwards Inn & Spa, 200 Main has a more casual approach to service. You’ll have to open your own doors, bring and even uncork your own champagne (though wine is sold in the lobby each evening if you forgot to pack a bottle), and lug your own suitcase into your guestroom. But once you’re in that room, you’ll feel like the discoverer of a bright travel treasure.

200 Main offers rooms that are ideal for couples seeking romance as well as groups of friends looking to book a block of adjoining rooms and then take advantage of all that Highlands has to offer, such as dining at Madison’s, golfing at the private Old Edwards Club or savoring a treatment at Old Edwards Spa.

200 Main is a complete renovation of the property previously called Mountain High Lodge. It is located in downtown Highlands, within walking distance of shops, galleries, restaurants and outdoor activities.

Of course, Old Edwards Inn remains Highland’s most upscale accommodations—and we at Getaways for Grownups continue to adore it. But 200 Main offers a delightful “casual” alternative for budget visits, quick trips, or a new and different Highlands experience.

Casual never felt so elegant.
