Relax and sip bourbon at Kentucky’s oldest family-operated country bed and breakfast inn in Harrodsburg, the state’s oldest city.

The chance to sit down and sample a line-up of six bourbons with an enthusiast aficionado proved to be a whole lot of fun.
Not that you need to twist our arms to taste bourbon.
When we stopped for the night at Beaumont Inn in Harrodsburg, Ky., during a recent exploration of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and new Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour, innkeeper Dixon Dedman invited my husband Dean and me to join him for a personalized premium bourbon tasting.
We’d already toured several distilleries (and this was our second official trip through Bourbon Country), so we know a thing or two about bourbon. Still, sipping some different brands that we’d never tried previously side-by-side and chatting about the spirit with an unbiased person who has a refined palate, someone who grew up surrounded by the industry and yet is not employed by it, proved educational.
As an innkeeper, Dedman says that not only is the new bourbon tasting “a lot of fun,” for him personally, it also offers him a new way to interact with guests that is more intimate and meaningful than a quick tableside chat in the dining room. “It’s more about the experience.”
“I try to pick six different flavor profiles,” he says of choosing any given line-up. “I try to include highly allocated bourbons, so our guests get a chance to sample stuff that isn’t distributed.”
The tasting at Beaumont Inn was a highlight of our bourbon expedition.
It also made the inn feel less like some anonymous roadside hotel and more like we were visiting a friend at his (very lovely) home.
The building that’s now the main inn was constructed in 1845 as a school for young ladies. It was purchased in 1917 by the Goddards and converted into the Beaumont Inn two years later. Today that family’s fourth and fifth generations operate the inn.
