Storied retreat near Mount Airy, North Carolina.

By Hope S. Philbrick

A few months after a friend and I discussed our mutual dislike of camping, this same friend recommended I stay at The Cabins at White Sulphur Springs, near Mount Airy, North Carolina, so I felt confident they would be above-average nice. Even with my expectations set high, I was impressed during a recent overnight.

This is as close to camping as I like to get. Here you can feel like you’ve gotten away from it all in the woods yet still enjoy all the modern conveniences—and, if need be, can get to a grocery, pharmacy, restaurant or even a winery in mere moments.

The Cabins at White Sulphur Springs - view from deckThe Cabins at White Sulphur SpringsIt’s the best of both worlds: You can look out the windows and see only trees, sit on the deck and hear only birds, fall asleep listening to a chorus of crickets, all the while knowing that you can take a hot shower, adjust the thermostat if need be, and surf the Internet if for some reason you can’t sleep at 2 a.m.

Remote yet accessible, these six cabins are located on historic grounds. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, White Sulphur Springs was a popular East Coast resort destination. Visitors came from near and far to enjoy the luxurious hotel, cool air, Blue Ridge Mountains, scenery and restorative mineral spring water. The old hotel is gone (it burned), but these cabins allow you to experience the lingering legacy of the area.

In addition to the cabin sites, there’s a 7.5 acre ‘Front Lawn’ along the Ararat River with a walking trail, hammocks, and areas to play horseshoes, volleyball, bocce ball, and badminton. (Game equipment is available from the office.) You can also hike the 145-acre property or stroll along the Ararat River.

Retreat to The Cabins at White Sulphur Springs for a night or longer, whether traveling solo, with a loved one or some friends. This is ‘camping’ for discerning grownups.
