Adventure on wheels in Giles County, Virginia.
By Hope S. Philbrick
Gearhead Junction is a new, small independent motorcycle service center in Pearisburg, Virginia that sells bikes, accessories and parts for v-twin and metric bikes.
Owner Terry Rafferty—an upbeat, energetic guy whose enthusiasm for motorcycles is clear and infectious—is also offering new adventure tours. We recently talked with him to learn more.
Tell us about your new motorcycle tours.
They’ll be all-inclusive. If you don’t have time or don’t want to plan a vacation for yourself, we can do it for you. The tours will let you ride your motorcycle through the beautiful Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains. You can fly into Roanoke, we’ll pick you up, bring you to your lodging, and throughout the tour food will be provided whether it’s made for us by a chef—for example, maybe we’ll have a gourmet picnic next to a waterfall—or we go into a dining establishment, depending on the specific itinerary that day.
All tours will be guided: one guide will accompany small groups and two guides will go with groups of five or more. A chase vehicle will be available.
Can anyone join the tours?
These are for experienced cyclists only. We’ll average eight hours a day on the bike.
What’s the advantage of touring this area by motorcycle?
You can cover more area than if you hiked. You can get closer to waterfalls and overlooks than is possible by car, plus we’re not just going where cars can go, we’re going places where you’d need four-wheel drive if you could even get access.
How long are the trips?
Mostly they’re over weekends. In Spring 2017 we’ll do a larger five-day tour.
We’ll go 80 to 100 miles a day, depending on what riders want to do. The majority may be off-road; we’ll be on secondary, tertiary dirty single-track routes.
We’ll mainly stay in Giles County, though we may venture into West Virginia.
The goal is to give people a good experience. I want to spoil these people.
What do you love about cycling?
It’s an awesome sense of freedom you can’t find anywhere else.
@21plusTravel Tip: Giles County is an outdoor adventure haven. Before or after your motorcycle tour, expand your adventure with hiking, kayaking, whitewater rafting and other fun challenges.
Odds of Encountering Children: Very slim.
