Eat in Atlanta — 16 August 2018
Now open at Phipps Plaza in Buckhead, Atlanta, Georgia.

“This place reminds me of The Cheesecake Factory,” my husband says once we’re alone at the table.

Before stepping away, our server explains that the full menu has over 200 options, but since this is a special event—an opportunity for the kitchen staff to “practice” before the restaurant fully opens—tonight’s options [on Friday, August 3, 2018] are more limited.

Turns out, Grand Lux Café is owned by the same company that operates The Cheesecake Factory, so the déjà vu is no coincidence. And yet every staff member who interacts with us on the rather long walk from the front door to our table—who knew Phipps Plaza was so deep?—and after we’re seated makes it a point to mention that Grand Lux Café got its start at the Venetian Resort, Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nev.

I get it. Not everyone brags about his sibling. Sometimes, you want to make a name for yourself.

The Phipps Plaza location of Grand Lux Café is the first in Atlanta for the California-based chain. Other locations are in Nevada, Florida, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Texas.

The upscale-casual concept, which “was inspired by extensive European travel exploring Italian trattorias, French bistros and the grand cafes and pastry shops of Vienna,” according to the restaurant’s website, aims to blend “the grandeur and luxury of European cafes with the sensibilities and spirit of an all-American restaurant.”

On the night of our visit, the vibe inside the restaurant is vibrant and bustling. Even though this dinner service is basically a dress rehearsal, this crew is ready to go: Every seat in the spacious dining room is full, yet no mistakes are made with our order, no long waits, even our water glasses never gets empty.

The restaurant is on the second story of the mall. It would be a convenient place to stop while shopping or on a date night when you plan to go to the on-site movie theatre, and since the staff works briskly and efficiently, the odds are good that you’ll make it to your theatre seat in time to catch the opening previews.

The menu offers a global mix of appetizers, salads, pasta, pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, steaks and seafood. There’s also a brunch menu and lunch specials. There’s something to please every palate.

Every dish we sample is cooked to perfection—and every dish delivered to neighboring tables looks just as yummy. Serving sizes are generous: We take what we aren’t able to finish in to-go bags to enjoy again the next day; it holds up well.
