Gratz Park Inn

Luxury in Lexington, Kentucky

By Hope S. Philbrick

As a travel writer, I sleep around—and let me be clear that by that I specifically mean upon many different mattresses.

For several years, I slept better while traveling than I did at home. I attributed it to the luxury of slipping into clean crisp sheets on a nightly basis, no snoring husband, no overweight cat crowding my legs.

But then, we bought a Tempur-Pedic mattress. Since that purchase, the best sleep I get is at home…which is rather inconvenient, given how often I travel.

A Tempur-Pedic mattress is expensive, and so before purchasing one my husband and I debated its potential merits and drawbacks for a long while. The tide turned on that debate after I stayed at Gratz Park Inn, where every guestroom and suite boasts a Tempur-Pedic mattress. I’d slept so well that I gained superpowers of persuasion overnight. I lobbied hard and we purchased one shortly thereafter. We’ve never regretted it, though I do sometimes wonder why I travel when I’m trying to fall asleep on some saggy hotel mattress with a spring jabbing my hip.

Gratz Park InnIt’s now a year or so later, and my husband and I recently stayed at Gratz Park Inn together. (My second visit, his first.) On the first morning of our stay we agreed: The Tempur-Pedic mattress at the hotel is even more comfortable than the one we have at home. It may be due to the overall ambiance of the inn or the simple fact that the mattress is older and thus more “broken in,” but deep, reinvigorating sleep is too often elusive. Not here.

If you want to experience what very well may be the best sleep of your life, head to Gratz Park Inn.

Great as the beds are, you won’t want to sleep your entire stay. You’d miss Lexington, which would be a shame, but you’d also miss out on this boutique hotel.

This Southern charmer has a gracious entry with a piano on one side and an inviting library on the other. Check-in is a breeze, though you will want to pay attention to the staffer’s tips on how to properly jiggle the guestroom key because this is a historic building with some endearing quirks. Folks who work here exude genuine hospitality and are eager to help, whether you need assistance carrying baggage or recommendations on where to eat. The décor is true to Kentucky style and elegant in an approachable way that may get you questioning your previous taste. Each guestroom is unique, spacious and welcoming.

This is a hotel that will infiltrate your dreams, day and night.
