In a word, it’s magical.

Hotel ChimayoStay at Hotel Chimayó and you’ll get more than a good night’s sleep—though you will get that, and upon what is arguably one of the world’s best mattresses. You’ll get an authentic, rich, immersive cultural experience alongside all the pampering and amenities you’d expect of an upscale hotel.

“Hotel Chimayó tells the story of the Village of Chimayó, one of the oldest and most sacred New Mexican communities,” says Maresa Thompson, senior marketing & creative director (a.k.a., corporate cowgirl) for Heritage Hotels & Resorts. “A tour guide there goes back 13 generations!”

Founded in the 17th Century as a fortified central plaza, Chimayó is an agricultural community nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, 30 minutes north of Santa Fe. The mission of the hotel and parent company Heritage Hotels & Resorts is to help inform the public about Chimayó history and culture while helping to preserve the heritage for future generations.

The Chimayó community is known for its artistic and culinary traditions, spiritual devotion and familial bonds distinctive artwork. Thus Chimayó-style handcrafted décor, artwork and village crafts, weaving traditions and traditional foods are incorporated into the hotel’s design.

Elements of devotion are included amongst the artwork on display. The hotel partnered with “70 artists to create 500 wooden crosses that are part of the décor,” says Thompson. Though the décor does carry a strong religious bent, it’s rustic and incorporated into the hotel in such a way that it appeals to guests of faith as well as those merely interested in culture and/or art.

Sitting in front of a fire, nibbling on local treats, surrounded by earthy artifacts while nestled on a comfy sofa or bed, it’s impossible to resist the charms of this place.
