In 1902, the same Dr. Lucius B. Morse of Missouri who developed Chimney Rock Park (now Chimney Rock State Park) into a tourist attraction recognized that if the area offered a lake even more people would want to visit. And so Lake Lure was created, which is today considered one of America’s most beautiful manmade lakes.
The best way to see Lake Lure’s 24 miles of shoreline and 813 surface acres is to hop aboard an hour-long pontoon boat tour. Anecdotes, legends, factoids and trivia shared by the guide provide an entertaining education about the history of Hickory Nut Gorge.
Landmarks showcased during the tour include several locations used in filming the movie Dirty Dancing—including the watery spot where Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze practiced the lift—plus the recently restored historic 1927 Lake Lure Inn and Spa and a $2.7 million HGTV Dream House.
When it comes to relaxing fun, it’s hard to beat a boat ride.
