Tribute Show on stage in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

By Hope S. Philbrick

On my drive to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, I’d listened to the B.J. Novak audiobook, One More Thing. In one short story, a new arrival in Heaven procrastinates over a long-ago promise to visit his grandmother; he becomes overwhelmed with concert options, from Mozart to Elvis, Frank Sinatra to Louis Armstrong.

Turns out, you don’t have to die to see Sinatra and Elvis perform. Just head to Legends in Concert at Broadway on the Beach in Myrtle Beach.

Billed as the “world’s greatest” live tribute show, five acts take the stage in this imitation extravaganza. The line-up of acts changes four times each year, mimicking legendary performers such as Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Little Richard, Whitney Houston, Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash and others.

“Not only do they look like the stars they portray,” boasts the brochure, “each legend re-creates the vocals and captures the magical stage presence of music’s greatest hit makers!” This is true for some more than others: Johnny Cash and Elvis were the best acts on the night I was in the audience.

The guy who imitates Elvis is uncanny. I never saw Elvis in person, only on TV (as a kid, I’m not that old!), but this guy is impressive, the best Elvis impersonator I’ve ever seen. His look, his voice, his costume, his stance, and his moves just ooze Elvis. It’s impossible not to be taken in.

“Was it real…or was it ‘Legends in Concert’? To tell you the truth, at times it was hard to tell.” — Boston Herald

The Legends show is compelling entertainment.
