LuLu’s Café On Main

Good eats in Sylva, North Carolina.

By Hope S. Philbrick

About a year ago, one of the most loved restaurants in Western North Carolina was taken over by new owners, who brought in a new executive chef and general manager. Locals may have been nervous, but apparently the changes were embraced: LuLu’s Café On Main was named the region’s best dinner and best lunch restaurant in Western North Carolina at the X Awards 2014.

The vibe inside the place is casual and relaxed, and it draws a true mix of folks from retro hippies and modern hipsters to rustic mountaineers to tourists from anywhere. Their common ground is an appreciation of good food.

Chef Devin McCardle trained at the New England Culinary Institute in Vermont. His menu presents an eclectic mix of flavorful fare, from Caribbean tropical pork, to fresh North Carolina seafood, to vegetarian tofu stir-fry, to chicken piccata, to cedar plank Atlantic salmon, to seared duck breast, and beyond. He specializes in fresh seafood, farm-to-table items and hormone-free, humanely raised proteins and has a passion for sourcing local ingredients.

The menu has options to satisfy carnivores as well as vegetarians and vegans.

The bar mixes up creative cocktails, pours wine, and also boasts an impressive list of local craft beers.
