Mandarin Oriental Atlanta

Luxury in Buckhead.
Stay. Spa. Or both.

By Hope S. Philbrick

The Mandarin Oriental Atlanta is a beautiful hotel—I’d surely notice that fact whenever I’d stay. But my first overnight visit just so happened to occur while major renovations were underway at my house. So for one glorious night I traded a construction-dust-filled work-in-progress for a stunning, spectacularly clean hotel sparkling with Art Deco décor details and staffed by ready-to-serve folks. In short, as a uniformed man held open the front door for me, I stepped into relaxation and left chaos behind.

I couldn’t help but utter “wow” taking in details from the ceiling fixtures to the tile floors; my husband exclaimed “wow” at first sight of the bathroom that was bigger than both of ours combined. Housed in a 42-story tall building designed by American architect Robert A.M. Stern, Mandarin Oriental Atlanta boasts 127 spacious rooms and suites. It officially opened its doors on May 1, 2012, but still has a youthful glow.

Our king guestroom boasted expansive space, elegant finishes and considerate features like double closets, dual sinks, a deep soaking tub plus separate shower with a handheld sprayer, comfortable chairs, a well-stocked bar, and a private balcony with views of bustling Buckhead. Two adults can easily share this hotel room without getting into one another’s way.

Thanks to the cozy mattress, I enjoyed one of my best nights of sleep at this hotel. A trip to The Spa earlier in the day had jump-started my relaxed state.

The Spa at Mandarin Oriental Atlanta

The Spa is a haven of bliss.

Pampering begins in the reception area when you’re presented with slippers and a cup of hot tea. You’re then escorted into the locker room and given a tour of where the find the showers, relaxation lounge, steam room, sauna, hot tub and other essentials.

Arrive early. For the best results, start your spa experience with muscle-soothing relaxation in the heat and water oasis. (Also, allow time after your treatment to linger; a post-treatment session in the steam room is a wonderful way to coax the essential oils into your skin.)

The Oriental Essence Massage is a full body treatment certain to have you feeling much better by the end of the session than you did at the start. After you choose an aroma—perhaps relaxing lavender, invigorating orange or the property’s signature Quintessence—you’ll be asked to slip face down between soft clean sheets on a warm cushioned table and then to inhale whiffs of whatever scent you selected. Worries vanish. Heavenly therapy begins.

The therapist starts with the feet, wiping them with warm towels and then coating them with oil and paraffin. Back, neck and shoulders get special attention, and pressure is customized to suit your preferences. Leg and arm muscles are addressed with long, flowing strokes and gentle stretching.

Rooted in oriental traditions, this massage is designed as a holistic approach to restore balance and harmony.

I arrived at The Spa feeling exhausted and achy from having spent the day painting a bathroom; I left feeling refreshed and reinvigorated, ready to continue renovations. Such dramatic renewal is possible at The Spa.
