The Carriage House Hotel & Riverspa

Live It Up in Lafayette, Louisiana

By Hope S. Philbrick

There’s something special about stepping into a hotel room and feeling right at home. Literally at home.

That’s the sensation my husband and I had when we discovered that our “room” at the Carriage House Hotel wasn’t a room at all: It was a fabulous two-bedroom, two-bathroom suite that boasted a full-service kitchen and laundry room as well as dining and living rooms.

Suddenly, it felt like we should host a Cajun dinner inside our spacious new digs in Lafayette, Louisiana. We didn’t, since I prefer not to cook whilst vacationing. But we definitely could have.

After a full day spent sitting side-by-side in the car to reach Lafayette, it was a welcome relief to have more than enough space to spread out in what was to be our accommodations for the next few nights. We could each claim our own bathroom, our own living room chair, our own shelves in the refrigerator, our own walk-in closet, and even our own bed if so inclined.

Carriage House Hotel is near City Club at River Ranch, a fitness/dining/event venue that’s located within an upscale work/play/live community. The hotel offers 21 hotel suites and six extended-stay condos, all individually decorated and appointed but with a shared local design sensibility that’s comfortable yet contemporary.

Carriage House Hotel operates as a boutique hotel; its rooms are positioned among residential condo properties, so you very well may meet some neighbors who are long-term residents.

This is a business that believes in relationships and personal service, so you can expect advance confirmation emails and a personal greeting upon arrival from friendly eager-to-please staff members. Once on the property, these same folks are happy to answer questions, whether you’re looking for additional towels or want some local dining recommendations. Freebies include continental breakfast and hot coffee, parking, internet access and City Club privileges.

Restaurants, bars, walking trails, shops and other amenities are within walking distance, including the spa haven Riverspa.

What better to pair with homey accommodations than a spa!? Riverspa is a short walk across the street from the Carriage House Hotel. Getting there is so easy the relaxation you seek begins before you even step inside the door.

As soon as you enter, friendly staffers offer a greeting then ask for introductory paperwork to be completed. (Fear not, it’s a pop quiz you can ace.) Then you can briefly sit and sniff the pleasant aromas lingering in the air or poke through the gift shop until you’re escorted to a locker room and/or relaxation area to await treatment.

Your scheduled technician will then escort you to one of the 11 private treatment rooms where the ahhhs settle in. The massage table is pre-heated, draped in soft sheets, and so cushy that you feel relaxed even before the treatment begins.

If stress reduction and muscle rejuvenation is your goal, a hot stone massage is an excellent choice, though the extensive menu of available treatments include massages, facials, nail services, waxing, skin rejuvenation, body treatments, lash extensions, make-up, headache relief and much more. The hot stone massage here lasts a decadent 90 minutes and is priced at $115, a great value. Skilled hands rub tension away using fluid strokes and custom pressure; smooth, hot stones nudge muscles into even deeper relaxation.

If you opt for a pedicure, feel free to gossip with your friends with wild abandon in front of the technicians at work here. They manage to keep a straight face and withhold judgment regardless of how enticing the tales may be.

After wonderful relaxing me-time, when you wander back across the street to return to the hotel you’ll be so relaxed it may feel like floating.

You could easily stay at Carriage House Hotel and never leave the neighborhood…though you may prefer a broader taste of Lafayette.
