Two Urban Licks

“Fiery American Cooking”

By Hope S. Philbrick

If you think you know a place, and then a new chef takes over, everything can change.

The good news for fans of Two Urban Licks is that new Executive Chef Todd Stein doesn’t mess up what’s worked for eight years. He actually manages to improve upon what was already widely considered to be a good thing.

“I plan to continue what has already been established at TWO while adding my signature style,” he says. “I prefer to keep food approachable by utilizing seasonal ingredients with minimal manipulation.”

A native of Highland Park, Ill., Stein may be new to Atlanta, Ga., but he’s not new to the kitchen: His impressive resume includes stints at kitchens across the nation, including BANK (Minneapolis), David Burke (Las Vegas) MK the restaurant, the Hudson Club, Cibo Matto and The Florentine (Chicago).

A few of the menu’s highlights include Buffalo cucumbers, a vegetarian and lower-fat option than chicken wings that proves equally tasty; watermelon salad, a sweet-meets-spicy match made in heaven that features fresh fruit, fresh mozzarella, almond mint pesto and green chiles; bistro steak, where meat grilled to perfection gets treated to a zing of chimichurri sauce; smoked chicken with herb and lemon seasoning that’s served with New York cheddar mac-n-cheese; and chocolate cake served with a vanilla milk shot.

The unique wine barrel program is the only one of its kind in the nation. The wine wall stands 26 feet tall and holds 72 stainless barrels of wine and features a gravity flow system for pouring. The barrels are displayed in a glass and steel, temperature-controlled tower. In addition to the wine program, infused cocktails hang from the rafters filled with exotic fruits. The food is great, but—trust us—you really don’t want to skip cocktails here.

  1. Can I just play fan girl for a moment and say that I LOVE your blog. Your breadth of restaurant coverage across Georgia (and elsewhere) is incredibly impressive. Not to mention every time I read one of your posts I leave feeling undoubtably more hungry or craving something new and unusual. I also enjoy your deep-cut finds around town–you really keep me on my toes with the ever-changing food community. I love your recent post on Two Urban Licks.
