Wake: The Foot Sanctuary & Shop

Relax, refresh, reboot.

By Hope S. Philbrick

Asheville, North Carolina is a great place to shop any time of year, with so many local independent retailers, art galleries and boutiques that feet can get tired before reaching them all.

For help to shop ‘til you drop then get back out there and shop some more, step into Wake: The Foot Sanctuary & Shop. Here, tired feet are pampered into rejuvenation.

Located inside the Grove Arcade, the window-facing side of the curtain is a retail shop filled with locally-made jewelry, candles, skin care products and more. But the real joy is on the other windowless side of that fabric faux wall.

After you’ve slipped out of shoes and into slippers, you’re escorted to a cozy sofa. Choose a soak that strikes your fancy from the menu—perhaps one featuring lavender, jasmine, rose salts and rose petals or the Bröö Man featuring Asheville’s own Bröö brand beer-based body wash, oils, and dried hops—and sit back. All foot soaks are prepared using local products, soaps, pure oils, and salts.

An attendant will wrap a warm lavender roll around your neck and offer tea or water to keep you hydrated.

In short order a huge copper basin filled with the custom-prepared hot water-based soak that you selected will be rolled over to you. Lift your legs, dip your feet in and ahhhh. Instant relief.

You may opt to simply sit and soak. Enjoy the spa music, close your eyes and relax. Pitchers of hot water are added at key intervals to ensure your soak remains toasty warm and cozy.

You can also add on a tailored massage focused on the feet and lower legs; head, neck and shoulders; or hands and lower arms to achieve a state of even deeper relaxation.

After about 45 minutes, your tootsies will be patted dry and powdered. And you’ll feel refreshed and ready to keep on strolling.
