Whiskey, Wine & Wildlife (W3), named one of the Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 Events, serves up delicious creations by distinguished, regional chefs alongside top-shelf whiskeys and wines. It’s sensational! Join notable culinary experts at the breathtaking beachfront location of the Westin Jekyll Island for a taste-oriented escape that is not only fun, but helpful: It benefits the Jekyll Island Foundation.
“Since its launch in 2016, W3 has quickly grown in size and stature,” noted event co-founder Kevin Baker, director of sales and marketing for the Westin Jekyll Island. “There’s a real appetite for upscale festival-style events like this, as evidenced by the growing crowds and the fact that in just two years, W3 has donated more than $50,000 to the Jekyll Island Foundation. If we can support the preservation of the island’s environment and our acclaimed Sea Turtle Center all while having some fun, I’d say that’s another W3; win, win, win.”
W3 is a great weekend retreat that strikes a balance between a full roster of activities and leisure time. The weekend kicks off with an elegant multi-course dinner on Thursday and continues through Sunday brunch at the oceanfront Westin Jekyll Island.
W3 quickly sailed onto my personal favorite events list. The flavors, the people hosting and attending, the location, the mix of events, the ambiance, the ratio of food/drink, the casual informality, the brands represented—there’s much to admire about this festival!
During the weekend you’ll meet some of the region’s best chefs and restaurateurs as well as winemakers and distillers from around the world. Expect to tantalize and reward your taste buds with inspired beverages and cuisine during multi-course dinners, educational seminars, buffets, parties, tasting extravaganzas (held both indoors and out, weather permitting) and more.
Expect to be wowed multiple times over the course of the event. I still dream about the shrimp and grits tamale that managed to present my all-time favorite dish (shrimp & grits) in an unexpected way. Throughout the weekend my husband and I made a wine and whiskey shopping list; we’ll be savoring flavors that we discovered during the event for weeks and months to come.
The festival raises funds for the Jekyll Island Foundation which helps protect coastal wildlife (including sea turtles). Silent and live auction proceeds are 100 percent donated. (So my winning live auction bid doesn’t just get me a beach house for a week, it helps save sea turtles!)
This culinary weekend is for grownups who like rewarding their sense of taste with opportunities to sip and savor a range of whiskies, spirits, wines, beers and foods.
The oceanfront views, upbeat music and relaxed island vibe sweeten the experience. The overall scale and pace of the event is laid-back enough to allow time for walking the beach and/or exploring the lowcountry island. Attendance numbers are just-right: There’s plenty of elbow room and time for genuine conversation.
This is a classy, fun event. Best of all, it’s for adults only. Get it on your calendar!
